The Sport of Kings

Paintball is great. The basic aspect of the game is to hit the member(s) of the opposing team(s) before they hit you. To do this you use a medium sized gun which used liquid CO2 or compressed air to shoot balls of paint at high speeds. The hope is that these balls will hit members of the opposite team, making them out. Because the balls don't travel as far a real gun, it is a game of strategy more than brute firepower. You need to flank, sneak around, and hide to really win a game of paintball. To answer the biggest FAQ of all time, YES it hurts to get hit with one. But you can get hit at the most 10 times in the day, and that is VERY unlikely. Usually you will get hit about 3 times in one day or 3-5 hours of playing.. Also, when I get hit I am more mad at being out than concerned about the fact it hurts.

The Freeballers are a loose paintball clan, with about 15 members, a figure that is rapidly increasing. We play nearly every week behind James' house, and love to do it. Our playing would be classified as recball, as we have never played as a group in any tournaments, or organized paintball fields. As we have played, we have all improved greatly, from groups that did not function together, to groups of people that execute sophisticated flanking maneuvers. If you are interested in competing with the Freeballers, feel free to send us a line.

The Freeballers almost universally use the Tippmann 98 Custom as their marker. Because it is inexpensive and durable, it is a perfect starting marker requiring little maintenance. Many Freeballers have tricked out their markers with add-ons such as new barrels, expansion chambers, new bolts, and other accessories. Without a doubt, the 98c is one of the best markers for upgrading, because most of the parts are inexpensive and readily available.

Behind James Wrigleys' house, a veritable city of 2x2s and particleboard has been springing up. So far, we have built three bunkers, the newest of which is incomplete but will be the best. The Wood Fort lies in the front left hand corner of our field. It is built into a bowl in the ground that was carved out of the ground a long time ago. It has been strengthened by the addition of particleboard, camouflage netting, and sheet metal that we found in the woods. The Tetanus Fort is constructed out of a very large piece of metal, that was wrapped around two or three trees so it forms two walls, a piece of particleboard, and a natural ledge. It is located about half way down the right hand side of the field. Our newest constructed fort, or the "good" fort, lies on the front right hand side of the field. It is not yet complete, but will someday have an escape shoot, four walls, and a second story. The second story will take a while to construct, but will occur someday. The "fourth" fort is merely a giant hole in the ground that, because of its shape, allows for people to stand, but only have their head and guns exposed. It also features a back way out up the hill, so you can try to flank out the wood fort.

Currently, the Freeballers have no formal structure, though some people, such as Josh, would like to organize the Freeballers with ranks and individual jobs. These jobs might include sniper, standard semi, rapid fire, grenadier, and possibly even a mortar crew someday. It is not clear if any of this will ever happen, because there is not currently a perceived need for any strong, formalized leadership.

In all, the Freeballers are a Recball organization that is rapidly becoming a more formalized and skilled organization. We hope to enter a team in some local amateur tournaments this spring/summer. Please check back later for more postings!

I know I am wrong at this point

Here I will post paintball news as I know it, that includes games and results. I did post a running kill tally.

Side Note - furthur proving that I am a bad person, I have not been keeping up with game descriptions or kill tallys. I haven't even kept up with a correct roster. So send me these things.

March 23, 2002 - 4 games were played with about 12 people in attendence. A new game called tug-of-war was tryed out; didn't go very well. However, most people had a great time dispite the fact that there was LOTS of blal breakage because of the cold.
